Using a Photograph

PP497 – A Sketch Challenge from Claire

My hubby has been taking photographs of ferns recently and then in post production he changes the photo a little. The background for my sketch effort is one of those changed photographs. The photo here doesn’t do it justice as there are a lot of colours in it but they show up quite dark for some reason. That said I pulled some of the colour from the background into my focal pieces as well as into the layered borders.

The die cut hexagon is one of the rescued pieces from a project I did some days ago. The inchies are also from previous projects and the die cut flower is using up the last of a water coloured piece I did some time ago. Die used for flower is from GKD and the hexagon is from a set that came with my Gemini. The stamps used are from CTMH and I stamped with Distress Oxide ink Mermaid lagoon to try to match the turquoise blue elsewhere. The pink glitter strip is also a left over piece. I am happy with how it turned out.

  1. Thanks – my hubby is really pleased when I use one of his photos. On occasion I make a background for him to photograph as he likes to make textures for his images. We might collaborate on some designs one of these days.

  2. You and Derek are quite a talented team, Johanna. So cool that you used his photo and I like the lighter contrast of layers and simple image. Love that hexagon die with the larger border. It’s a WOW for me.

  3. Thanks Gayle. That hex Crafters Companion die is much thicker than the ones from Sizzix and other N. American companies and when I tried to use it to emboss the shape it made a mess of the cs. To save the 3 tries I cut the shape by hand so I could still use it. It certainly worked for this card as white on the darker background makes it really pop.

    1. I ordered some Crafters Companion Christmas edgeable dies the middle of June that I’m anxious to try. Still not shipped and may not make it to me for Christmas in July.

  4. I think shipping is disrupted by Covid in many places. Hero Arts were shut down and are so backlogged nothing is really getting out. One order from them is in Blaine – can’t go to get it and there are 2 other orders there as well. SSS orders took over a month to arrive – thankfully no duties to pay. MFT arrived within 4 days as they used couriers and it cost me another $21 because anything coming by courier has duties to pay. With the exchange and duties the stamps cost me a lot of money. My local store is still waiting for a Crafters Companion order so I can’t use my B’day gift until it arrives. We just have to be patient – not my forte.

  6. Johanna, I love the picture you used and all the colors in it. You really brought it out with how you designed the front and the colors you used there. Great collaboration! Tell your husband I’m looking forward to seeing what you two do working together with a goal in line.
