I started this card with the vellum challenge, at As You See It, in mind, but with no real idea as to what I would create. In looking through my paper files I came across a couple of sheets of Patterned Vellum from The Paper Company. They are so old I don’t think that this company is even around these days. Anyway I chose the one you see here and decided I would make it look as if it was a thin window. When I held it over the shimmer card front it didn’t show that well so initially I thought to colour the back with white ink or a pen. I wasn’t happy with that and had a bit of a brain wave in that I remembered a technique of pressing through the vellum so it sort of embossed it, but also showed up white on the other side. Using a silicone mat and a couple of those round heads used for shaping flowers etc., I did the section that shows behind the side panels. It took time but gave me exactly the look I wanted and even better, as I was doing it I thought it kind of looked frosty and would work for the challenge at Inkspirational too. The term Jack Frost came to mind, hence my title. The benefit of adding it the way I have, meant that no glue shows through and it is popped up foam tape for some definition. The sentiment is from Spellbinders cut from the same shimmer CS. Originally I was going to leave it sort of like white on white, but in the end I went over it twice, once with a silver pen and then again with a sparkle one and it stands out nicely against the rest. I added some bling from Trinity Stamps and called it finished.
To answer the challenge question regarding my favourite thing to do with vellum is a challenge all of its own. I don’t use it as much as I probably should, but do like to use it when I don’t want to hide too much of a design or PP.

The card looks way better in person than in the photo, and I’m quite pleased with it even though it was tedious tracing the design from the back. Thanks for stopping by, it is appreciated.

Oh Johanna, I think this is beautiful. Love how you placed the vellum panel. Looks like a winner to me.

Your velum panel is lovely! I rarely emboss velum but it adds such interest.

If I run vellum through a regular EB folder it often cracks and breaks. Doing it this way gave me great results and as long as I was careful it didn’t tear. I’m glad you like it.

Goodness, that patterned vellum is wonderful. There was a gorgeous SU one a couple of Christmases ago which this reminds me of. I like your idea of a narrow snowy window – very wintery. Thanks for joining us again at As You See It.

Thanks Jan. I’m glad I only chose to do a section of the embossing otherwise I may still be trying to finish it. LOL.

This technique that you improved on made a very frosty card. I can almost see the ice in that design. I love how you placed that sentiment on the front too.

Thanks Lisa. As I mentioned to another comment, I’m glad I chose to do only a section. I’d still be working on it if I had to do the whole piece.

Thanks Gayle. It worked so much better than I thought it would but it was definitely tedious to do.

I think this came out great, Johanna! I really like the look of the vertical “window,” too – great design! Sounds like you and I feel about the same way about vellum, lol, not sure I have a “favorite” thing to do with vellum either, but my teamies sure inspired me to try a few new things! Thanks so much for playing at As You See It!

If it looks way better IRL, then it must look amazing, as it looks great in the picture. The shimmer shows and what a wonderful way to do it differently and give it a different look. It makes me smile to see what you create and hear how you did it.

I can only imagine how tedious it must have been to emboss all those designs by hand, Johanna! I applaud you for your patience. I’d love to see that shimmery cardstock in real life, too! I bet it’s a real stunner! Anyway, you came up with a great wintery design and a unique way to use the vellum! Thanks for filling in the blank for us at As You See It Challenges!

Thank you. Every once in a while my patience is good enough to do something like this but I choose the times carefully.

The effort was worth it Johanna – your panel is a great way to draw the eye to that embossed vellum, which has so much texture and interest. Thanks for sharing with us over at As You See It Challenge!

Thanks Joanne. I may do another, but it will have to be on a day when I have nothing else to make.
